In order to make this breathtaking mountain cosmos as accessible as possible to locals as well as visitors from all over the world, Zermatt Bergbahnen has been pursuing a well-thought-out transport and tourism strategy for many years.

A number of mountain railway companies (Matterhornbahnen AG, Zermatter Rothorn AG, Standseilbahn Zermatt-Sunnegga AG, Gornergratbahn Sport Area, Skilehrerlift Riffelberg and Sesselbahn Findeln) merged in 2002. This marked the founding of the largest independent cable car company in Switzerland - a success story at the foot of the Matterhorn
